Why am I Doing This?!
First things first.
I am not a hugely popular musician. Honestly, I’m not even very good at most instruments.
Music hasn’t made me rich. Turns out it’s hard to make money as an independent musician.
I started Lodge Cove Collective for a couple of reasons.
A Creative Outlet
I’ve been making music in some form or another since I was a teenager. Back then I was in some bands, played some shows, etc.
Like many people, at some point other parts of my life took priority over making music. Raising a child. Work. You know, grown-up stuff.
In fact, for a long time (years) my guitars were just hanging on the wall, never being played.
So, at one point I decided to get back to making music. I’ve always really enjoyed the recording, mixing, and mastering side of things as much as the songwriting. So I basically was just recording music for myself.
Eventually, I decided I wanted to start sharing my stuff.
A WAY TO LEARN
During my hiatus from music creation, a lot had changed.
The price, performance, and capabilities of recording software had improved DRAMATICALLY. The same goes for hardware like audio interfaces and microphones.
The music industry changed in a major way as well. Streaming services like Spotify appeared. Apple Music. And all the others…
So producing music at home had never been more accessible, but I still had a lot to learn.
How do you release music on these platforms? Will anyone listen? How do I find my audience?
A WAY OF COVERING COSTS
Full transparency time… producing, releasing, and marketing music can be expensive. And I’m willing to bet that the vast majority of us would love to be compensated for the time, energy, and money we invest in creating our works.
I’m definitely going to be discussing this aspect in-depth in future posts… but straight up, no B.S…. I would love to at least cover the cost of all this EVENTUALLY.
So be aware that if you see me link to a product or service, this website may make a small commission from it. That said, I will not be endorsing, promoting, or attempting to sell any product or service I have not either used and/or paid for personally. Or (in some cases) have at least done enough research to understand who might benefit from said product or service, and who might not.
Fair enough?
A WAY To Collaborate
l love pretty much all aspects of making music. I love being able to it all myself. But I already mentioned that I’m not the best musician in the world.
I also happen to know some talented folks who want to share their own creativity with the world. But they don’t have the recording experience that I have, or the time to put it all together into a release-ready finished product.
Since making music with other people is a great way to broaden my own horizons (and a lot of fun), this project is a way for me to help us all get more music out into the world.
A Way To Share
Being the nerd I am, I started doing research into the tools and resources available to independent musicians. A lot of research.
And there is a ton of information out there. Some good, some bad.
There are a lot of companies and individuals out there trying to make a quick buck off of people like me… people who want to find an audience for their music, but didn’t know how. And many indie artists are being targeted based on a desire to become rich, famous, or whatever.
So I decided that I wanted to share not only my music, but the process. For me the process didn’t start from absolute zero, because I already knew how to record, produce, mix, master, etc.
But making the music is just the very beginning. I want to share what I’m learning about the rest of the process as well. The process of distributing, releasing, and marketing your own music.
So that’s why I’m doing this. I want to collaborate with others, make some music, document my experiences, and share it all with anyone who might get something out of i
