About A Song

I just realized that due to the title of this tune, it’s gonna be kind of confusing to write about. You see it’s a song, about writing a song!

The Inspiration

Looking back… there really was no inspiration behind this song. At least not at first.

I was trying to come up with a new song. I had a few chords and a melody… but nothing to say.

After awhile, I got frustrated and decided to just write a damn song about being frustrated trying to write a song!

The Creation

This one was recorded fast and raw. I decided not to worry much about fancy production, or following songwriting rules. For example, this tune has three choruses… but no hook.

None of the chorus lyrics are the same!

Lyrically, it’s all just a stream of consciousness sort of thing. I wasn’t trying to make it pretty, or marketable, or anything. I decided I wouldn’t care if I released it and nobody liked it.

Of course, I did release it… and I DO want people to like it….. but if you don’t, that’s fine. It was the whole point!

I quickly put together the arrangement, laid down some tracks, cobbled together a few vocal takes. You aren’t going to hear a bunch of vocal harmonies or pretty effects. Pretty raw, like I said.

The mix went quickly. There were flaws that went un-fixed. The master was SO FAST it’s not worth mentioning.

And then I knocked together the album art in about two minutes and submitted it to my distributor. I think I set the release date for something like one or two weeks out… far less than the recommended 4 weeks minimum to give the song a shot at Editorial Playlists… I guess I just wanted it done and out there.

Now it is done, and it’s out there, warts and all. Since release, I’ve done some minimal promotion… a quick lyric video, a little experiment on Instagram…. that’s about it.

The Results

As expected, this song didn’t get a lot of streams coming out of the gate… but there is something interesting about it for those of you who are interested in music promotion and such…

The people who liked it really seemed to like it! At the time of this writing, About A Song has less than 1000 streams on Spotify. BUT… it has the highest number of streams per listener and saves (likes, adding to personal playlists, etc) per listener of anything I’ve released so far. And it generated the most new followers.

I still want more people to hear it, but I can’t be mad about that!
